FREIGHT GROW - AUSTRALIA - Faster than the economy

Freight needs to get on track
Australia -Australian,by Robin Bromby -March 26 2005: -- FREIGHT movements in Australia will grow faster than the economy through to 2020... That will bring three serious consequences... First, it will increase by 65 per cent the number of trucks... Road spending will need to skyrocket, yet even fixing an existing problem can mean years of stalling... Second, there is likely to be a 90 per cent increase in articulated truck movements in our main cities. This means congestion plus another 700,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and an estimated $70 million a year or more in additional accident costs... The other problem has been too few crossing loops, leaving freight trains in sidings for more than an hour waiting for another train to pass it in the opposite direction... http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,12657116%5E28737,00.html
