STORIES - SYRIA - Border delays: caused by needed security checks?

DAMASCUS,Syria - Boston Globe,by Rhonda Roumani/Boston,MA,USA -July 17, 2005: -- Syria's crackdown on commercial traffic at the Lebanese border has created a logjam of trucks backed up for miles and is threatening to worsen already tense relations between the two countries... Hundreds of trucks carrying fruits, vegetables, and other perishable goods have been double-parked bumper-to-bumper at two border crossings for almost a week. Drivers who say they could usually cross in less than an hour have been moving only inches per day, and many have had to spend countless nights sleeping behind the wheel... Lebanese farmers say that the delays have caused their produce to rot and that losses have reached up to $2 million so far... Since Syria pulled troops from Lebanon in April, relations between the countries have been strained. The border, normally bustling with travelers in the summer, has been relatively empty, as fewer Syrians and Lebanese make the two-hour trip to each other's capitals...
