Proposals - USA - Is more rail a good idea?

Carlisle,PA,USA -Carlisle Sentinel -Aug 21, 2005: -- ... Both of these problems could be moderated by revitalizing the railroads. For cargo, larger warehouses could feed goods to truck terminals via rail, and smaller trucks could complete the delivery. Warehouses designed to be served by rail could be farther off the beaten path, meaning less confrontation with residential property owners... We're aware that railroads are costly to maintain, let alone revitalize. But we also are aware that government subsidizes the transportation system we have now in ways we don't think twice about. For example, transportation experts concede that we overdesign new roadways to accommodate a growing number of the largest trucks, and that extra cost could be construed as a subsidy to encourage the use of trucks as cargo carriers... On the other hand, one could argue that Americans' recent tendency to shy away from acting as a community, as depicted in the book "Bowling Alone," might also be the reason we have allowed our railroads to shrink. We'd rather keep control over our personal cars, or a fleet of trucks, than surrender to the top-down authority of something like a national railway system...
