FRANKFURT,Germany -Forbes Autos, by Nick Kurczewski & Bengt Halvorson -21 Sept 2005 :-/ The 61st Frankfurt International Motor Show featured a disparate mix of Teutonic sport cars, hybrid sport utilities and a head-spinning array of global partnerships... DaimlerChrysler announced that it wants to build minivans for Volkswagen while BMW, General Motors and DaimlerChrysler joined forces to develop gas-electric hybrid technology in an effort to wrest some market share from dominant Toyota. Along with the latest outlandish boutique super cars, a triumvirate of Chinese car manufacturers debuted vehicles verging on four-wheeled paperweights, some with images of brake discs painted – yes, painted – onto their drum brakes... One of the overarching themes this year seemed to be that no automaker is immune to the growing pains that have seized the industry as nascent technology promises to alter motoring for good, national economies continue to meld into a global one and oil markets maintain their upheaval... The only thing hotter than the stifling temperatures inside the show halls were rampant corporate rumors and maneuvers...
