Alternative - USA - Valley Companies Consider Ships as Alternative to Trucks

Sacramento,CA,USA -KXTV/News 10, by C. Johnson 17 Nov 2005: -- A Santa Rosa shipbuilder is proposing to build a fleet of small cargo ships that would travel the waters between Stockton and the Bay Area. The proposal is being seen as a way to save fuel and ease traffic congestion... Margaronis told them there are several advantages to building the cargo ships. For one, "Each ship would take 150 truckloads inbound off roads and 150 going back empty," he said. "[That's] 300 truckloads a day."... The proposal is particularly attractive to those companies operating fleets of trucks, since diesel fuel is still over $3 per gallon... The company would build the small, fast ships at Mare Island at a cost of about $15 million each...
