Rules - Thailand - Heavy trucks face a tight corner

Bangkok,Thailand - Bangkok Post, by ARANEE JAIIMSIN -17 Nov 2005: -- Truckers are calling for new load limits to be decided quickly before the current limit comes up for renewal on Dec 31... If a new limit is not approved in time, truckers could be in trouble as the restriction on 10-wheel vehicles would revert back to 21 tonnes... The limit has been relaxed in recent years to allow trucks to carry up to 26 tonnes... Trucking companies would also need to know whether the new load limit would apply to 700,000 existing trucks or not... Truckers also want to change the height limit for vehicles, which is currently 4.2 metres as required by law. However most container trucks are 4.6 metres, but heights at haulage firm vehicles vary... According to Mr Vichai, the Highways Department has also been asked to allow trucks on motorways to cut companies' costs. But tollways were a different matter because the roads are privately run... Because tollways were engineered to carry vehicles of a maximum weight of 21 tonnes, tollway operators are insisting the government pay for any damage caused by trucks weighing more than that...
