Hazardous Health - USA - Tires can be home to mosquitoes, rats

Beloit,WI,USA -Beloit Daily News -Aug 28, 2006: -- Approximately 240 million tires are discarded every year in the United States, millions of those in Wisconsin alone... When piled in yeards, fields and businesses, tires are an eyesore, but they are also much more. Rock County Health Department Environmental Health Director Timothy Banwell says they are hazardous to the health of citizens... “Old tires provide a home to pests, including mosquitoes and rodents. They can be a fire hazard as well,” Banwell said. “It makes good sense to dispose of tires properly to prevent illness.” ... The risks associated with burning tires are dangerous. Acrid black smoke from burning tires can pollute the air, and the oily substance produced while they burn can contaminate streams, rivers and ground water...
