On the road again - USA - Couples joining the ranks of truck drivers

... he misses the days when trucking was fun, when “there was no DOT (Department of Transportation) and no scales to worry about,”...

JOHNSTOWN,El Paso, TX,USA -The Longmont Daily Times-Call (Longmont,CO), by Tony Kindelspire -27 Aug 2006: -- John Bigbie, 78, has been driving a big rig since he was 15 years old — so this is no baby-boom retiree taking up a new line of work in his golden years... Based in El Paso, Texas, Bigbie says he misses the days when trucking was fun, when “there was no DOT (Department of Transportation) and no scales to worry about,” but he can understand why older couples might be attracted to life in the cab of an 18-wheeler... Bigbie, however, may be wearing a bit after 63 years of putting the hammer down. He said he’d swap places any time with one of those couples attracted by the romance of the open road, his choice being to spend his time driving for R-and-R instead of a living... (Times-Call/Jackie Endsley - John Bigbie, 78, has been driving commercially for 63 years. Though Bigbie has been on the road a long time, he said he is seeing more older people, especially couples, joining him on the road)
