The Senate Labor and Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee voted to advance a bill that would deem drayage truck operators, as well as any owner-operators, going onto the ports of Seattle and Tacoma to be employees of any company that “directly engages the services”... House lawmakers already approved the bill. Soon be brought up for consideration on the Senate floor... No facilities would close before mid-May due to a temporary moratorium announced in December intended to give Congress time to pass legislation to help overhaul the agency, Reuters said...

Or is it bringing a sledgehammer to a friendly logbook discussion?...  The Iowa DOT is preparing to receive bids for an order of 107 AR-15 long rifles to be used by its motor vehicle enforcement officers, who now are authorized to carry pistols... Mark Lowe, director of the Iowa DOT’s motor vehicle division, said peace officers working in commercial vehicle enforcement are sometimes the closest officers to a suspect or emergency situation... Lowe pointed to several incidents in recent months, including a carjacking chase from Missouri and an individual who killed his wife in Centerville, IA, before killing himself on Interstate 29 as a motor vehicle enforcement officer arrived on the scene... Lowe said the rifles are identical to those carried by other law enforcement officers in Iowa, including Iowa State Patrol officers...
